Tolerances in ammunition are not merely a matter of aesthetics. A deviation in the alignment of a shell affects its ballistics. A defect in the primer well affects the reliability of ignition. An undetected surface defect in a cartridge case will not become apparent until the moment of use.

The station is designed as part of the production line's final inspection process.
